Her Stepmother Called Her A Nobody, Until The Lawyer Read Her Father’s Real Will

Chapter 7: The Money Diana Moved

Diana tried to leave the room before Samuel opened the financial attachment.

That was the first thing that made everyone understand it mattered.

She stood with one hand pressed to the back of the sofa and said she needed air.

Samuel did not raise his voice.

“Mrs Whitfield, you may step outside after we record your acknowledgement of this review.”

Diana looked at him with open dislike.

“This is harassment.”

“No,” Samuel said. “This is estate administration.”

Emma almost admired how calm he stayed while Diana broke shape in front of everyone.

Chloe looked from her mother to the sealed file.

“What review?” she asked.

Diana snapped, “Be quiet.”

The words came too fast.

Chloe heard the fear inside them.

So did Emma.

Samuel opened the attachment and placed a summary sheet on the table.

“During Mr Whitfield’s illness, several transfers were made from family office accounts.”

Gareth Vale shifted in his chair.

Samuel looked at him. “Some were prepared by your office.”

Gareth swallowed. “Under Mrs Whitfield’s direction.”

Diana turned on him. “Do not be stupid.”

The room heard that too.

Samuel continued. “Payments were routed to renovation companies, consulting entities, and personal service accounts.”

Emma read the first line and felt heat rise behind her eyes.

The amounts were large.

Too large to be mistaken for household costs.

One payment was marked as care support.

Emma remembered sitting outside her father’s hospital room with a vending machine coffee.

Diana had told her specialised care was too expensive.

Emma had believed her.

Another transfer was marked as property preparation.

Chloe’s new apartment address appeared beside it.

Chloe leaned forward. “Mum?”

Diana said nothing.

That silence answered more clearly than speech.

Samuel placed another document down.

“Mr Whitfield requested monitoring after noticing unexplained cash movement.”

Diana said, “Thomas asked me to manage everything.”

“Yes,” Samuel replied. “Not to move estate assets beyond review.”

Gareth reached for his water and knocked the glass against the table.

No one helped him.

Emma looked at Diana. “You told me there was nothing left for certain medical arrangements.”

Diana’s face hardened. “You do not understand what a house like this costs.”

Emma looked at the chandeliers, the flowers, the silver trays, and Chloe’s bracelet.

“I am starting to.”

Chloe stood up. “I did not know about this.”

Diana hissed, “Chloe.”

But Chloe’s panic had already become selfishness.

“You said Emma would be gone before anyone checked the accounts.”

The sentence fell into the room whole.

Even Chloe seemed to hear it after she said it.

Gareth closed his eyes.

Diana turned slowly toward her daughter.

Emma did not move.

Samuel wrote one note, then another.

“Thank you, Miss Whitfield,” he said.

Chloe’s mouth opened, but no defence arrived.

Emma looked at Samuel.

“Can we suspend all access now?”

Samuel nodded. “Yes.”

Diana said, “Emma, do not dare.”

Emma’s voice stayed quiet.

“You moved money while my father was dying.”

Then she looked at Gareth.

“And you helped.”

Gareth turned grey.

Emma placed the watch on the table.

“Freeze the accounts.”

For the first time, Diana looked at Emma as if she had finally become real.
